The Importance of Clothing

By Matthew Pierre

The way we dress often says a lot about who are, what we believe, and where we come from. Think about this for a second. There’s an ole time saying that goes “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you who you are” and I fondly remember one of my secondary school teachers using this proverb as a measure in determining the character of a person. In the same way, clothing can be used as another measure for the same purpose. It is often said that first Continue reading

From the Crew

“Behold! I make all things new.” If it is one thing that youth are good at and admired for, it is there creativity. A young person’s ability to take nothing and make something out of it; to transform a boring Sunday evening into a pool party; a free period at school into a freestyle rapping competition; a popular song into funny commentary on the State of Emergency. Wherever creativity rears its head in youth, we applaud you!

Vision, being the voice and guidance for youth through media, is on a creativity path of its own this coming year. Traditionally, each paper was guided by the Sunday Gospel reading that the issue would fall on. For reasons that we hope are obvious, this was indeed a good experience, for it helped us to find our place as youth in the Gospel and forced us to reflect on our Christian journey. However, we have decided to move from this beautiful tradition toward something that we hope would be even better – more pointed and directly youth oriented.

So, from now on, our paper will be guided by themes. What’s that you ask? A theme would be a particular issue or area of concern that are pertinent to young people. These themes will be chosen by the team for each quarter of the year, each individual issue being guided by the relevant theme. It is a bold step, but we are willing to take it. The theme for this quarter is entitled “Relationships” with this week’s focus being “How far is too far?”

Now this is where YOU come in. The Vision team has a Facebook page and a group (‘Vision – Catholic News Youth Supplement’ and ‘Vision Magazine (Catholic Youth Magazine)’ respectively). You all can meet us there and share your concerns, ask questions and give suggestions for issues that YOU think we should address! If it is not put into the paper, look out for it on Facebook because we are not letting anything pass us.

I pray that you not only enjoy our fresh ideas, but that your heart will be touched by the grace of our Lord in whatever way he sees fit. Keep us in your prayer as we keep you!

Do you think that the Evangelical Churches seem more attractive to young people today than the Catholic Church?

Dominic Del Pino

YesSince the majority of young people are usually more attracted to lively, charismatic music which a lot of Pentecostal and Open bible churches seem to offer. Also, I think that there are better youth programmes in these other christian sects (btw I’m not sure) and they encourage a greater degree of interaction amongst their youth.

Jodie Sutherland

Yes. Simply because in my opinion the protestant churches place our young people in bondage with their strict outline of what is expected of themwhereas with our church youths don’t appreciate the fact that they are governed by a similar strict outline however, we are allowed the opportunity to express our freedom of choice.

Justice Ferreira

Well yes, it seems so because their churches have alot of things for the youths and they take their faith much more seriously than some of us Catholics and if we all start to take our faith seriously we would have more youths staying in the Catholic faith. We should have more youth expos and stuff and get youths from all over to be more involved.

Genéve Hyndman

No. Because in Trinidad it isn’t very likely for young people to choose their faith, usually what they are born into they stick to it, whether they actively practice it or not. And with going to a Catholic school that’s kind of where your social circle is.

The Reason for Our Hope

So very often we find ourselves at a point where we feel like there is very little reason to go on. We feel overwhelmed by the challenges life throws our way. Exam stress, unemployment, boyfriend/girlfriend trouble and so on can be a bit much to bear at times.

There is a source of hope that we as Christians can tap into and we can find it by simply reading the Word of the Lord. This is especially true when we look at this weekend’s readings. The first and second readings speak about the joy that the disciples have in evangelization which is not done arbitrarily or in isolation but through their love for Jesus. This love, Jesus also speaks about in the Gospel when he uses this as a basis for why we should keep his commandments.

Jesus also speaks about this love when he says that “I will not leave you orphans”, but would send the Holy Spirit. In saying this, he also alludes to the intrinsic relationship of love among not only the Trinity (Father, Son and Spirit) but also between the Trinity and those of us who keep his commandments.

This love feeds into our lives especially in this time of Easter and gives us hope to continue to move forward in the face of adversity. This love is Jesus Christ and is the reason for our hope.
